GAS (Great American Sound) Legendary SON OF AMPZILLA Picture(s) and Description:

GAS

We’re Natural Sound, located in Framingham, Massachusetts. We've been in business since the 1970s and have many of the best brands on display. This GAS Son-of-Ampzilla was recently traded in. It is in fantastic shape. There is one minute, hairline scratch on the right side of the faceplate that you can see in strong light up close, but it was hopelessly too small and shallow to capture in photos. It’s almost in museum condition. We also have a copy of the owner’s manual, which will come along with it. This amplifier was built in the US, as all GAS amps were. We do not have the box. To ensure it gets to its new owner in the fantastic shape it’s in now, we will be taking it to our trusted person at the local UPS Store to pack it for safe shipment. Nothing he has ever packed for us has been damaged in transit. There is a $25 handling fee built into the shipping calculator for this item to cover the cost of packing. Please take that into account if the shipping looks a tad expensive. First the basics: The Son of Ampzilla is a Stereo (2-channel) Power Amplifier. It pumps out, conservatively, 80 Watts per channel into 8-Ohms. It’s rated at 150 Watts per channel into 4-Ohm speakers. It can also run 2-Ohm speakers, a VERY unusual feature. This makes it an ideal amp for running electrostatic speakers (at reasonable volumes). Into 2-Ohms, it will pump out well over 230 Watts per channel on peaks. The power rating covers the entire hearing range, 20-20,000Hz.This amplifier uses double pairs of output transistors. This is why it can handle low impedances so well. This means that… 1) Each transistor only carries half the usual load and is never stressed. 2) Each transistor only carries half of the current, so they run cooler. 3) Since the transistors are in parallel, the output impedance of the amp goes DOWN and the DAMPING FACTOR goes UP. Damping helps some speakers with a little “boominess” in the bass get tighter control on themselves. 4) With so little stress on the transistors, the amount of current that the amplifier can deliver into low impedances is very high. If you have speakers that dip to low impedances, this is your amp! Each channel of the amp has its own a HUGE heatsink to keep the transistors cool. The total heatsink surface area is an amazing 1000 square inches. Cool-running transistors is one big reason why this amp, which was made between 1977 and 1982, is still running so well today. The bandwidth of this amplifier is +/- 1dB from 1-100,000Hz, which is amazing. The noise, at better than -100dB, is insignificant. The amp is protected against short circuits in the speaker leads and from overheating. It measures 19” wide x under 6” tall including feet, and it’s only 12” deep. This amplifier was designed by James Bongiorno. He is one of the most respected amp designers ever. He designed amps for many other companies. Most of his designs have become classics. GAS (Great American Sound) was famous for building amps that had great ability to drive difficult loads, created a very three-dimensional soundfield, and never, ever, sounded harsh, like so many transistor amps. This model, the Son of Ampzilla is generally considered to be his best sounding GAS design, though certainly not the highest power. This is often the case, that medium-power designs sound smooth and, overall, better than their similar high-power brothers. Front panel meters read the average power delivered, and look quite cool. The meter lamps are all working. We are setting the RESERVE very low on this amp very low, at $199. We expect it to bring quite a bit more. It would be hard to find any amplifier today for under about $1000 that provides the same smoothness, depth of soundstaging, and ability to drive “difficult” speaker loads. Please give it a good home. Things to know… This item is USED, AS-IS, with no warranty, refunds, or exchanges. It was tested in my system for 2 days and I can report no problems with it. We accept PAYPAL ONLY. We ship this item to the US and Canada ONLY. We will NOT SHIP this item OVERSEAS. It is set to 120 Volts and I’m not sure it can be changed. Items sold to / shipped to within Massachusetts will be charges sales tax. The above words are the property of KZ Consulting and are NOT to be copied.
